OMAHA DESIGN PROJECT

Some new friends of mine recently contacted me about a property they redesigned in my previous neighborhood, charming Dundee, in Omaha, Nebraska. Mark and Mikal Eckstrom submitted photos of this project for the Luxe Interior + Design 2021 RED Awards in five categories. What a fun surprise to see one of my all-time favorite homes in Omaha!

I used to walk by this house frequently, and I have always wanted to see the inside! The house has changed owners a couple times, and the newly designed inside is quite a departure from the traditional Spanish exterior. Mark and Mikal are confident with their color choices and modern interpretation of the spaces. The before and after photos show the incredible transformation.

The kitchen, before the renovation, was not in desperate need of a re-do per se, except the desire for a completely different look and feel.

And here we are. The floors are incredible! They are Belgian bluestone which they felt had historic provenance. The electric blue ovens are fab, especially mixed with the chartreuse counter stools. This color combo is repeated throughout the home, and each time it is a welcome surprise.

M+M included a nod to the original design by repeating the front door’s strap hinges on the refrigerator/freezers. “They give a wink to the original Spanish Colonial style without being too derivative. Keeps the space modern yet whimsical.” I couldn’t agree more.

The dining room before. . .

After!

The chartreuse leather on the dining chairs is fantastic, and check out the ceiling! The ceiling seems higher, no? Love the paint color change - bright and white. ADORE the sisal rug on the floor.

Next up, the family room, or the “salon” as they call it.

Before. . .

Those pops of color really brighten up the room, right?

Love the rug update so much. It’s a custom Kyle Bunting cowhide and includes the family crest Mark and Mikal designed for the house, Casa SxS. .Two intersecting “S”. It’s also dog and kid friendly!

The book shelves are really wonderful. The electric blue and chartreuse combo continues!

Love the dramatic height of the drapery, and the opening edge design. Very cool light fixture!

#turquoiseandlime = current and refreshing

As I have said in previous posts, I am not a professional designer, however, I definitely consider myself current as far as following high end designers, furniture brands, and designer fabrics. If you have been following me for a while, you can probably recognize my “look” when it comes to decorating. That being said, I immensely enjoy and appreciate many different design aesthetics, and this is a stunning example. Absolutely delighted and inspired looking through these photos.

Here’s a shot of the family room off the kitchen. . .

One last room for you…

The principal bathroom is adorned with these Gucci herons, and I literally die for this wallpaper.

Love everything about this. Except that teeny tiny chair. I’m not sure if it’s the right size for my bottom :) (It’s one of a pair by Maison Bagués, and styled for the photo shoot…) But the tiger print is a yes. And anyway, this room is all about the wallpaper.

This photo is from an instagram post from Brockschmidt & Coleman that I saved. I recognized the Gucci herons immediately when I received the house photos from Mark. It’s so good.

Back to Omaha…

How would you like to spend some time in this gorgeous oasis? Custom Zellij tiles were used throughout. This photo is especially dreamy considering the snow that is currently covering pretty much everything in Omaha. I am actually in Naples, FL right now, so it looks pretty good to me. The chairs are especially smart.

What an absolute treat to have the opportunity to enjoy these images virtually! Thank you to Mark and Mikal for sharing this incredible transformation with us! It’s just a peek and unfortunately doesn’t include the pink Brunschwig & Fils Les Touches girl’s room. I’ve also heard rumors about a media room featuring Timorous Beasties wallpaper. There may be a chance to see more in the future. I’ll keep you posted!
