NANTUCKET

Each time we visit Nantucket, we leave feeling satisfied, as if we won’t feel the urge to go back for a while. But when summer rolls around, we find ourselves scrambling, planning a last minute trip, wondering why we didn’t plan ahead.

Flying private is the way to go. If you have never been to Nantucket, it is not that easy to get to, which partly makes it seem special, but also, a big pain. We flew on Delta, which connects to Cape Air from Boston to Nantucket. The Cape Air flight is a plane that seats 8 people. You can’t even carry your purse onto the plane. Someone in our family has been seated next to the pilot a couple times, and this time, it was me.

It’s a short flight, but not really something I can get used to. I get nervous in that tiny plane. At the end of the flight, I thought the pilot was asking me a question and heard him saying, “Could you set the something to 3500 and press this important button,” so I asked him to please repeat his important instructions and immediately realized he was talking to the air traffic controller and not me at all. My family seated behind me got a kick out of that. I couldn’t hear and I was nervous!

Our suitcases did not show up with us on the tiny plane. It’s no wonder.. the plane is so small, there is only room for either people or suitcases. Luckily, the Greydon House awaited us. It’s a favorite hotel, and I always take and post the obligatory photo of the beautiful shower in the room.

Our suitcases showed up the next morning, but Hillary’s did not. We took this opportunity to shop for a couple cute outfits and took our jeep to the beach for the day!

We drove around the island and took in the sights. . .

Every variety of hydrangea you can imagine can be found on Nantucket.

We love driving around and reading the names of the cottages.

We love to walk through Flowers on Chestnut. . .

Nantucket is where I was inspired by different varieties of caladium, coleus and rex begonia and incorporated them into my own yard. I believe these are coleus leaves, and I adored them - the lime green!

Hillary’s suitcase showed up on Thursday, but about the time she got unpacked, we were encouraged to try and escape Henri which was headed our way. It was going to shut down the airport Sunday and Monday, so we headed to New York for the remainder of the weekend.

It certainly didn’t look like a tropical storm was coming, but it came! In fact, it’s path began to veer towards New York right after we arrived on Friday. We made plans to get to the New York Botanical Garden to see the Kusama exhibit on Saturday before the rain started. It was hot and humid, but we were so excited as we had to cancel our trip to NYC in 2020 for the same exhibit when it was canceled.

Photos from the Kusama exhibit coming up next!
